In Defense of YA
Too light, too shallow, too this or too that. YA literature – like Science Fiction and Fantasy - has joined the ranks of genres that often include explanations such as “It’s good…for a YA book,” by those new to it. But for those in the know YA is just as complex, dark, emotional and beautifully written as any other category of literature.
Join authors Seth Fishman (The Well’s End), Lydia Kang (Control), April Genevieve Tucholke (Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea), Kendare Blake (Antigoddess) and E.C. Blake (Masks) as they discuss the appeal of YA (whether it be SF/F, Horror or Dystopian YA) and why it rules the school.
Geek Geek Revolution
GEEK GEEK REVOLUTION is a no-holds-barred geek culture game show featuring six science fiction/fantasy authors competing for the chance to be TOP GEEK. In addition the audience members will be asked to 'write-in' questions in hopes of stumping the authors and winning a prize pack of books. Hold onto your hats, nerf herders, this might get ugly. Featuring authors: Marjorie Liu, Mark Frost, Seth Fishman (The Well’s End), Patrick Rothfuss (Kingkiller Chronicles), Lydia Kang (Control) and Kevin Hearne (Iron Druid Chronicles).

In the literary world, there are mystical beings, futuristic landscapes, magic and mayhem, heroes and villains and slowly but surely, more diversity in our heroes. Our panel participants are the creators that have made a more diverse world with their novels. Join authors Gene Luen Yang (The Shadow Hero), Josephine Angelini (Trial by Fire),Sherri L. Smith (Orleans), Adele Griffin (The Unfinished Life of Addison Stone), Greg Weisman (Spirits of Ash and Foam: A Rain of the Ghosts Novel), and Lydia Kang (Control) as moderator David Mariotte of Mysterious Galaxy leads the discussion of what is "diversity" in genre writing, what it looks like, and why it is important!
AFTER-PANEL SIGNING: TABLE AA08, 11:30—12:30 PM
Over fifty young adult and middle grade authors will be offering signed and finished books, swag, Skype visits, query and writing crits! All to raise money to fund research and help patients with CCHS (Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome, aka Ondine's Curse--the breathing ailment that the main character in CONTROL has).
Join other readers to win books, prizes, and read exclusive content from tons of your favorite YA Authors!
Lydia will be posting (somewhere on the Blue Team hunt) an exclusive bonus scene to CONTROL and will be giving away a signed copy of CONTROL plus deluxe swag on her blog. For details about how the Scavenger Hunt runs, click here.
Join us in celebration of Teen Read Week! Our feature event will be an author visit: a panel of local Omaha Young Adult novelists who will participate in a discussion and Q&A about their newest novels. Golden Sower nominee John Kalkowski ('Red Cell'), Lydia Kang ('Control'), Tonya Kuper ('Anomaly') and Chris Raabe ('Phenomenon' trilogy) will lend their talents to the panel. This year’s theme “Turn Dreams into Reality” is a perfect fit as they share with us the thrill of being a published author. Let them inspire YOU to turn your dreams into reality!
Authors will sign books after the event.
