Incredibly happy to be sharing some wonderful blu Incredibly happy to be sharing some wonderful blurbs I’ve been receiving for K-Jane! This one is from a fellow Nebraska author that you may have heard of…the wonderful @rainbowrowell!

Please do check out her book, Slow Dance, a Reese’s Bookclub pick and NYT Bestseller, which releases in paperback on June 3. 😊

About Slow Dance:
Shiloh Butler was supposed to get out of north Omaha.

She used to sit out on the front porch with her best friend, Cary, and plot their escape. Shiloh was going to be an actress – she had a scholarship to a good school – and Cary was laser-focused on the Navy. Sharp, stoic, golden-eyed Cary . . . thin as a stick of gum and poor as dirt. He was probably the most decent person Shiloh has ever known. She hasn’t spoken to him in fourteen years.

When Shiloh gets an invitation to a high school friend’s wedding, Cary is the first and only thing on her mind.

She desperately wants to see him again, but she doesn’t know if she can bear being seen by him. What would Cary think of Shiloh at thirty-three? A divorced mom living in the same house she grew up in. Someone who works behind a desk, not onstage.

Would Cary even want to see Shiloh after all this time? After everything?

The answer, it turns out, is yes.

In her triumphant return to adult fiction, Rainbow Rowell has written a love story so honest and human – so cathartic – you’ll feel it in your bones. Slow Dance is a power ballad of a book, brimming with Rowell’s signature compassion and wit. It’s deeply affecting and profoundly romantic.

It’s been over a decade since I’ve written any It’s been over a decade since I’ve written any poetry. This one was prompted by the @nebraskamed @unmc_im General Internal Medicine department’s last annual retreat where we all took a few minutes to write 55 words about anything at all. I took that little scribble and expanded it into a poem about life and death, comfort and discomfort, the bonds that we health care practitioners form with our patients, the beauty to be found in the plainest of places, and the struggle many of us have with our mortality.

It was published last week in the Ad Libitum section of @annalsofim. I wish I could share it with you in its entirety but alas! Paywall and copyrights exist.

If you have a subscription or can get it through your library through loan, I hope you get a chance to read it.

Last year I noticed a weed growing in our hosta patch. It looks familiar and I realized it was grape! I decided to let it grow, and I gave it a little support to cling to and this year it’s huge. Curious to see if it will grow any fruit and what it will taste like!

I will always be thankful for the sacrifices that my mother and mother-in-law have made in our lives for the sake of their families. They deserve all the flowers and embraces today!

Looking back on some of the pictures of me being a new mom and I remember thinking that I looked so horrible and haggard back then but really I was glowing and I had no idea. We all need to be kinder to ourselves!
What are these glowing jars of rosy, ruby magic, y What are these glowing jars of rosy, ruby magic, you ask? It’s my first batch of rhubarb jelly!

It took years to make this happen. I know this is probably exciting to no one except gardening nerds, but ever since I started gardening after we moved to Omaha, I really wanted something perennial that would come back every year without me constantly working at it. About five years ago, I bought this really sad little rhubarb plant from a local garden store that was on sale for a dollar. It was on death’s door, and after I planted it in my raised beds, it got completely overshadowed by other plants and looked fairly pathetic. I gave up on it. The next year, lo and behold, it popped up with a few leaves and I just let it be. After that, it came back with gusto and started out-competing everything else in the raised bed so I dug it up and planted it near the pumpkin patch in the far corner of the yard. By now the roots had turned into this giant ball that looked like a monster.

So this year I chopped off about 5 giant stalks and cooked up so jelly to go with our toast and B’s sourdough bread.

It’s so pretty!! And yummy!

Now I need to make some scones!

Did an interview recently and we discussed my writ Did an interview recently and we discussed my writing journey. Writing nonfiction and YA and historical adult fiction all have different pulls on me as far as the research that’s needed, the energy that goes in, the time it takes, and of course, the ones that I enjoy more than others. I love them all, but they are all very different! Case in point, the fact that historical novels require quite a bit of research before I ever write a single page. These are photos that I took while writing the novels that take place in historical Manhattan. The books go from 1850, to 1899, to 1918, and 1942. I can’t write a scene unless I know what the characters are seeing and smelling, and what building they see when they walk around the corner in historical Manhattan. Hence the giant maps!

I’m taking a little break from writing historical fiction. More news to come!
